Survey Technician

Skillings, Inc is a civil and environmental engineering and surveying firm headquartered in Lacey, WA for over 36 years. Skillings has a culture of mentorship and training for the right employees who are dedicated to professional growth. The Survey Technician position is a great learning opportunity to work under a licensed surveyor to expand your land survey knowledge and work towards licensure.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing computer terminals to input and retrieve information; compile data to produce useful reports and drawings.
  • Perform survey and mapping functions in the office and/or field environment.
  • Establish points and elevations, location and drainage for streets, sewers, runways and structures. Plots profiles and cross-sections, figures grade lines, calculates volume and areas and plots and calculates traverse closures.
  • Accurately operate, adjust and maintain measuring instruments including levels, GPS equipment and total stations with electronic data collecting capabilities for field to finish operations.
  • Download field data, provide first draft review and QA/QC edits of lines, symbols and codes after processing field data in the CAD environment.
  • Perform mathematical and geometric calculations including closing and adjusting level loops and field traverses and has an understanding of atmospheric impacts on measurements.
  • Take accurate, complete and clear field notes. Note reduction by recording survey measurements, descriptive data, drawings and sketches.
  • Assist the field party chief with the ability to consider relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose what is most appropriate.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles used by survey crews.
  • Perform survey research as it may pertain to a particular project.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent with two or more years of progressively responsible technical engineering experience in one or more areas.
  • Additional technical training or education may substitute equally for the experience. A minimum of 5 years of responsible working experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License with clean record.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.

Desired Experience / Certifications:

  • Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT).
  • Carlson office software
  • Trimble Business Center

The work of this position requires occasional travel. Travel may be for the day, overnight, or extended overnight.  The positions are full-time with salary DOQ.

Design Engineer-Transportation

We have worked extensively in Washington State, and love collaborating with our local governments. Our engineering group is currently involved in several municipal and design-build projects, and our ideal candidate will bring their education and experience along with a collaborative spirit to hit the ground running on both current and upcoming projects.

Our transportation team specializes in corridor design, signalized and roundabout intersection design, traffic & roadway/highway design, transit design, stormwater design. We’re looking for someone who wants to learn and grow in the engineering profession through exposure to a variety of projects.

Your key responsibilities in this position include working on teams to plan and design municipal and transportation related engineering projects and preparing documents including reports, plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or related field)
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) license or the ability to get it within 6 months
  • 0 – 3 years of relevant design experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D and/or MicroStation/Inroads Storm and Sanitary

Project Engineer-Transportation

Our ideal candidate would be proficient with horizontal and vertical alignment design, utility relocations, coordination with structural engineers and other engineering disciplines, earthwork, quantity take-offs, specifications, and engineer’s estimates.

One of the things our employees love most is the opportunity to do a variety of work including engineering design and plan production, overseeing and mentoring technical staff, participating in project proposal development, and collaborating with our survey and environmental departments.

Other Duties Include:

  • Coordinate projects with supervisor, project managers, and firm staff
  • Provide sketches and/or detailed layout information to design staff for incorporation into the construction drawings
  • Design, prepare and analyze preliminary and final plans in Autodesk Civil 3D, and Microstation/InRoads software.
  • Prepare and design street/highway improvement plans
  • Analyze maps, reports, drawings, as-builts for design projects
  • Develop reports, specifications and designs for projects
  • Develop, track and modify project schedules.

Other Duties Include:

  • Plan, direct, and monitor all aspects of large multidiscipline transportation projects or medium-sized projects with high degree of technical complexity
  • Produce and coordinate scope, schedule, and budget for several projects concurrently
  • Conduct project meetings with internal staff and clients to solve technical challenges
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through project development to complete projects on schedule
  • Implement QA/QC procedures
  • Maintain professional engineering registration
  • Establish and maintain client relations and lead contractual, design and production meetings
  • Coordinate and execute marketing strategies with the Marketing Department
  • Supervise transportation project staff
  • Provide transportation engineering training and mentoring for junior staff
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Registration in Washington
  • 15+ years of Transportation Engineering experience
  • 5+ years of Project Management experience
  • Demonstrated business development and strategic planning skills
  • Good communication, leadership, planning and mentoring skills
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active partner in both project and marketing work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on WSDOT Projects
  • Experience developing winning proposals
  • PMP
